Google Offering Incentives for Improved Device Support - Dismas - 06-27-2021 Google is offering developers a lowered 15% fee, in exchange for supporting a wider range of hardware. This might not sound like big news but it actually is, since some of the biggest developers pay 30% in fees currently. By enabling large developers to make 15% more money, it's likely apps will offer increased support for other hardware. Increased app support could also make non-phone Android devices more desirable than they already are. Quote:There are 3 billion active Android devices in circulation now, and that means developers are eager to support Android. The vast majority of those devices are phones, so for app developers not particularly interested in the wider Android ecosystem, that means pump out a phone app and you're done. A vibrant ecosystem of non-phone Android hardware is also out there, though—Wear OS, Android tablets, Android Auto, Android TV, and Google Cast. Google would like more developers to support those devices, and its new scheme for this has a real shot at working since it relies on the universal language: money.
