Neural Implant Lets Paralyzed Person Type - Oni - 05-12-2021

A neural implant allowed someone who is paralyzed to type 90 characters a minute. While not especially fast, it's pretty reminiscent of cyberpunk literature.

Quote:Elon Musk's Neuralink has been making waves on the technology side of neural implants, but it hasn't yet shown how we might actually use implants. For now, demonstrating the promise of implants remains in the hands of the academic community.

This week, the academic community provided a rather impressive example of the promise of neural implants. Using an implant, a paralyzed individual managed to type out roughly 90 characters per minute simply by imagining that he was writing those characters out by hand.

Previous attempts at providing typing capabilities to paralyzed people via implants have involved giving subjects a virtual keyboard and letting them maneuver a cursor with their mind. The process is effective but slow, and it requires the user's full attention, as the subject has to track the progress of the cursor and determine when to perform the equivalent of a key press. It also requires the user to spend the time to learn how to control the system.

But there are other possible routes to getting characters out of the brain and onto the page. Somewhere in our writing thought process, we form the intention of using a specific character, and using an implant to track this intention could potentially work. Unfortunately, the process is not especially well understood.

That's actually pretty impressive. Hadn't heard much in the world of implants in a practical use but this is pretty cool.

That's a remarkable achievement.

It will only get better with new developments tested and Introduced.

Wouldn't be surprised if there's cognitive/skill implants in the next 20-40 years. Say for example, you buy an implant that allows you to be combat-ready or technically adept. Less complex implants were tested in the past to aid those with Alzheimer's (and Parkinson's).

I think implants are scary but incredible. They could really help with Alzheimer's and paralysis, but I wonder if they can also be used to help us study the brain (safely) so that we can understand more at a medical level. I'm so impressed this is possible, given how much we still don't understand about the brain.

Very promising to those with disabilities. Surely will do a lot of good if they could transfer their thoughts in writing. Development in medical science is incredible. I wish more such invention will benefit the physically challenged the world over.
