A new softmod was released for the new Sony Playstation. That new game that just came out for it not available in your region yet? Not a problem!
For real though socram8888 has just released a rather neat softmod for the original Playstation and its bubbly twin the PSOne. It takes advantage of a classic buffer overflow in a few games loading data from memory cards to launch software that can bypass region-locking and copy protection. Called tonyhax thanks to its initial use on the Tony Hawk Pro Skater line of games, it is applicable to a huge line of games with more likely to be discovered. The process varies based on the game but it generally goes like this.
- Using either a modded PS2 or a PC with a Memory Card adapter copy a specific savefile to your memory card.
- Insert the memory card into Slot 1 of your console.
- Launch the vulnerable game and cause it to read that save data as applicable. For example in the THPS line allow it to read the card and click the Create Skater option in the main menu.
- After a few moments the screen will change into the tonyhax screen and request that you remove the vulnerable game disc.
- Next insert either a game from another region or a copy.
- Close the lid and after it reinitializes the drive it will run the executable and you're golden.
It seriously beats having to have the serial port for UniRom or a proper mod chip.
I have to find my old Playstation from storage and give it a shot. Maybe I can finally record some old Playstation gameplay with this.

Everything that I've seen has been promising and it could also allow an easier way to run homebrew applications/games on the original PS as well.
