Pretty outrageous. They are taking Google for granted, given few people would even read their news without it.

I'm struggling to understand why google needs to pay for content they connect users to? For free, they are providing a platform for news entities to receive more traffic...?

I assume Google hasn't heard of a VPN.

lol, also thought about the vpn services, the same thing having happened in the US with tiktok a couple of months ago

It's absolutely ridiculous.

Moreover, why are they solely targeting Google and not other leading search engines to the likes of Bing, AOL and Yahoo? They all provide a gateway to the said content.

Here's a recent article I've just stumbled across, which Is even more bizarre.

This does just get more interesting. There was a lot of "legal speak" in that article but I managed to get the gist. I wasn't at all aware about the French part. Especially this:
"The agreement with France allows Google to negotiate individual licenses whereby payment will be based on specific and measurable metrics. This includes Google paying on behalf of the reader for any content published behind paywalls, allowing users access to content they wouldn’t be able to see unless they made a payment."
