We've all heard about various countries imperatives to find sustainable energy, whether that be climate change driven, driven by the need to find a good energy source when there isn't enough oil to go around, or driven by the desire to avoid paying another nation to import energy. There are incredible strides being made in the energy industries around the world. One great example, is an experiment pioneering nuclear fusion, based in Oxfordshire in the UK.

Fusion differs from fission, the technology used by existing nuclear power plants, because it could release vast amounts of energy with little associated radioactivity. The £55m machine has taken seven years to build. Current nuclear energy relies on fission, where a heavy chemical element is split to produce lighter ones. But nuclear fusion works by combining two light elements to make a heavier one. It's an attempt to replicate the processes of the Sun here on Earth. Unlike fission, it produces no long-lived radioactive waste and could transform the way we source our power - tackling the climate crisis at the same time. "Backed by £55m of government funding, powering up the Mast Upgrade Device is a landmark moment for this national fusion experiment and takes us another step closer towards our goal of building the UK's first fusion power plant by 2040."
