How to start/participate in a proper debate. - Four - 04-15-2013

*Thread has been stickied by Uzi - Well done.

Seeing that very few members can even participate in a debate on here as of now, I feel this thread is necessary. There is a few key concepts in holding a debate and while some are common sense, most people don't do it.

Here is a few things you should know to start a debate:
  1. Have an actual debate. Don't make a thread that just expresses opinions, that's for the lounge. (Ex. ___ vs. ___)
  2. State your side of the debate in the original post.
  3. Reread the post to make sure people will understand what the debate is about.

Here are a few things you should know to hold a proper debate:
  1. Quote the member who you are either agreeing with or going against. It will help understand which point you're going with/against.
  2. Post HQ responses even if it's a LQ thread. If it's only a one sentence response it is most likely not strong enough to hold a debate.
  3. If you are stating facts, cite a source! This will not only make you look smarter, but it will help get your point across.
  4. Don't rage at a member with whom you disagree with. Try to lay back on the profanity and stay mature. If you have some rage to express and can't hold it back, post in this forum.
  5. It's okay to drift off from the main subject once in awhile, but try your best to stay on topic.
  6. Don't be too biased. Have an open mind to other people's views.

Official Rules of Debates:
  1. Follow the site rules.
  2. Don't post anything that's not a debate in the section. (Ex. Look at my dog!)
  3. Make sure to use the Search feature to check if your debate has already been posted.
  4. No silly debates. If you decide to create a pointless debate, your thread will be junked.
  5. All members are entitled to their own opinion. Do not flame or harass another member because they have stated their own opinion on something.
  6. You are expected to respect other people's ideas and views here. You're allowed to disagree with them, but you must do so in a respectful manner.

This is all I could think of at this point in time.
Post some of your suggestions and I'll be more than happy to update it.
If you see someone doing something LQ or anything, direct them to this post! Biggrin
