96.3% drop in Japan's April Box Office - Jiggly - 05-19-2020

This April, 12 of Japan's major film distributors collectively earned approximately $6.4 million at the box office this year. This sounds like a large sum, but is actually 96.3% less than this time, last year. It is the lowest earning in a month, that has ever been recorded (since records began in 2000).

Box office performance fell 90% in the first weekend of April compared to the same period last year, and all theaters closed by mid-April after Japan declared a nationwide state of emergency. The MPPA reported that theater revenue throughout Japan was "close to zero" in the latter half of April.

I wonder if this, lowest in 20 years streak, will bounce back as the world recovers from Coronavirus. Last weekend, 100 theatres opened in Japan. Hopefully, they will report better figures for May.
