Amazon Using Thermal Cameras to Detect Covid-19 - Jiggly - 04-21-2020

Apparently, Amazon is using thermal cameras to detect Covid-19 in it's staff. The cameras will detect a fever by comparing staff temperatures, to that of their surroundings. Amazon say this technology is significantly quicker than the close-range thermometers previously used for temperature screening of their employees. I would imagine, the use of a camera is more social-distancing friendly as well.

Thermascan managing director Dave Blane said thermal technology had been widely used ever since airports around the world adopted it during the 2003 severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) epidemic. "We've seen a rise in the use of thermal technology across a variety of industries, to the point where there is almost trouble to keep up with demand," he said. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned temperature screening for Covid-19 could yield false positives and is not effective for those who are asymptomatic.

I've relied on Amazon a lot recently. It's good they're keeping an eye on things, as some people might not even realize they're sick.

Quite accurate In detecting a "fever", but by no means consistent with the COVID-19 virus.

The symptomatology of a fever can Include pneumonia, ear Infections, meds, gastro and even the common cold. I suppose they can use the detection to have their workers medically examined/tested for the virus.

It can help identify a spike in someone's temperature. Realistically it's only streamlining the temperature checks they were already doing. I don't think we have any other reasonable means to detect the virus in workers, unless testing becomes an instantaneous process and the tests are available to all.

I most certainly agree, hence my above statement:
Quote:I suppose they can use the detection to have their workers medically examined/tested for the virus.

I'm just wondering what type of examination/tests doctors perform, to conclude as to whether a given patient does/does not have the virus.

I can't comment on other countries, but in Britain, there are two tests being talked about a lot. This article from the BBC has a decent description of what many news sources have spoken about in the past few weeks.

The first test is a swab, which is then examined in a lab to find genetic material from the coronavirus. Another test they're hoping to produce en masse once developed, is an antibody test. This can be done in seconds, and is designed to help identify who has already had the virus, and now has the antibodies to fight it. This could be extremely useful for coming out of lockdown. If we know x number of workers from x industries have antibodies, then we know they may be safe to go back to work, and kickstart the economy.
