Censorship In Comedy - newdrip16 - 03-31-2020

Do you think censorship in comedy should be enforced? If so then to what extent, and should it be legally enforced or just by the venue?

it depends how to person says it and if they think that they agree with their jokes, if they just say something racist but try to defend yourself by saying that it is a joke, it will not help because you're basically looking like you just think racism is a joke (which it isn't), but if the person brings it sensibly as a joke, it might be a bit confusing but the right words should be use. If a person does a joke about drugs or death, they should show signs that they do not actually think what they're saying is actually true, this can also be referred as sarcasm

TL;DR: try not to do those, or just choose the right words, a poorly-choosen word in one of their jokes, it is going to look bad on them

I think censorship in comedy is a really bad idea. Humor is subjective, and just because one person laughs at one thing, that shouldn't mean someone else can censor that.

It depends on people. Someone can like it others not

As a general statement, you cannot please everyone.

It's pretty simple- If you don't like the content, don't listen to It.

It's interesting you mention this, because traditionally comedy has avoided censorship. It's an outlet to discuss things that might otherwise not be. Unfortunately, people are aiming for political-correctness and that's changing. For example, a while back Kevin Hart was supposed to host the Oscars. That was his dream, until some of his older (possibly homophobic) jokes surfaced. To me, comedy will lose it's purpose if jokes about race/sexuality/religion become "out of bounds".

I strongly agree with this.

If you were to watch a film that features murder, should the film be censored because murder is illegal and it could upset someone? That sounds ridiculous, right? You'd tell whoever was watching it, to change the channel. So why would we have different rules for comedy, which is also entertainment?

Comedians talking about difficult topics can encourage open discussion, and provide an opportunity to re-frame how you think about some topics.

I wholeheartedly think censorship of comedy is a bad idea.
