2 of Largest Domain Registrars Breached - Oni - 12-17-2019

2 of the largest registrars were compromised. Don't worry, we've never used either. Tongue

Quote:Attackers have breached Web.com and two top domain name registrars that it owns, NetworkSolutions.com and Register.com, according to Krebs on Security. Web.com issued a security notice advising customers that they will be forced to reset their passwords the next time they log on. Such breaches are particularly worrying, because domain name registrar customers are website owners, and around 8.7 million of them are registered with those companies, according to Krebs.

I know right? While I personally hate NetworkSolutions, they are definitely one of the largest, especially among older network operators who haven't switched over to new registrars. Hacks are inevitable though especially with staff who don't stay ahead of the curve. Glad to hear we've never used either.

Prior to reading the article, I thought GoDaddy would be part of the breach. They have around 19 million customers, which Is certainly larger than what's mentioned below.

Is there any way to have a copy of the breached data? Most likely will surface in underground marketplaces in the couple of days/weeks.

Only databases I keep are for Sinisterly and merged sites. But I do think you'll find them in the wild.

Thank goodness I haven't registered any of my own stuff with them. The logins could be abused in many ways. Some people may register domains as a means of profit. Registering original names, and selling them. So just anyone could waltz into their accounts and delete a domain. Or, the logins could be used on other sites entirely.

Which Is precisely what I (partly) do.

I'm constantly monitoring premium domains that're set to expire, purchase them at regular cost, and sell for a premium price. Thankfully, I'm not registered with either of these registrars.
