Just downloaded f-droid what are some great apps to get?
also is there any lockscreen thing with remote wipe if you fail an attempt so many times it will wipe the phone?

Correct.

When the number of unsuccessful attempts have been exhausted, the data will be erased. I believe you can set the lockout threshold.

Most android devices running Google Android that have been released in the past few years have both remote wipe, and unsuccessful attempt wiping features built in.

i was looking for more of an open source one maybe on github? maybe you know of

On the Meizu M6 Note, this is implemented in the Flyme shell itself.

I recommend EDS (paid). It allows you to create/access Containers such as VeraCrypt for example. I have a few Containers on my phone's SD Card that holds photos and documents in case if my phone got stolen and the potential theif is going through my SD card.

Root required of course and making Containers via VeraCrypt is recommended.
