Just for kicks I considered putting this in the hardware forum. But, two days ago I performed a self implantation of a Lattice Labs mData NFC microchip. This basically allows me to use my phone as a keycard, unlock my computer, unlock my car, start my car, and I carry a business card in my hand that can be scanned by just about any mid-high range smartphone.

I had my girlfriend keep the skin tented with forceps, but aside from that, I performed the actual implantation, prep work, and aftercare all myself. For my own safety I chose not to use any anesthetic, lidocaine or otherwise. The needle was the size of a helix piercing needle (16 gauge) which is a little larger than a regular ear piercing needle but way larger than a regular vaccination needle.

I put some pictures of the procedure below below, in a hide tag, so don't open it if you're uncomfortable with needles or blood.

As of today everything seems to be working pretty well. It scans and writes just fine, however the scar tissue has been making it a little bit harder to work with, but that will go away in a few weeks. No sign of infection or rejection so far, but I've been changing out the bandaid every 6 hours or so just to make sure everything goes good, since I did do it myself.

I'm considering doing a magnet implant also from Lattice Labs coated in parylene in my fingertips. That unfortunately requires a bit more work (actually cutting the finger open, and stretching open the pocket) that I'm not comfortable doing without lidocaine. I have a friend who's in med school who I can have perform the actual procedure, coupled with a digital nerve block for anesthetic. Hopefully that will go well, but I'll wait for this to heal first.

To be honest it doesn't feel real to me either, I've been waiting years to perform this procedure. Most people like Amal and Alex have really expensive chips, and while the price is certainly warranted and I would encourage people to go to them because they're tried and true, Lattice Labs delivered me a high quality chip that hasn't had any problems so far, the only difference being the cost. I'm still incredibly anxious about it because of how cheap the chip was and the fact that I performed it myself, but everything seems real enough

My house has a deadbolt that supports NFC and Bluetooth for unlocking it. My car uses remote start and I've repurposed the keyfobs to stay inside the car, and have it set when I pass my NFC tag over it through the Window it unlocks (or locks) and there's one in the console where when I pass my hand over it, it starts the car.

Well that's pretty crazy. I've never actually known anyone who has actually gotten this done. The only way I'd put this in my body is if I knew every connection coming in and out of the chip.

This is pretty cool buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut also pretty dumb as mothered mentioned above.

Glad to see something like this in action as to what it does and to what extent it can operate.

Neat to see people actually doing this, regardless of the possible consequences. What happens if the chip goes bad or needs replacing? Also wondering what happens if they scan you at the airport.
