How do you rank up? (bronze silver gold) and then gain access to more areas in the forum? i'm just curious lol, do you just need to be active?

You gain NSP by being active which you can then use to buy upgrades by going to the Points tab and clicking on Shop. Or, you can purchase upgrades with real money. I don't think you miss out on much with the blocked off sections since most people post in the non-upgraded sections anyway it seems.

To add on to what @GOD said, you're not really missing out on too much by not being upgraded other than helping the forum out. The upgraded lounge (spoiler alert!) is entirely dead. I think it might be at Diamond rank that you get access to viewing the Bans page but that's about it. Other than giving rep, the ban page and upgraded lounge are all you're missing out on.

I wouldn't focus too much on the upgraded forums.
Just to name a few perks- username & usertitle changes, IP ghosting and better Inbox capacity are certainly beneficial.
