Why do we name things the way we name them? - Feat - 07-28-2013

One example I was thinking about was: Internet

Like, we get most of our words from Latin words mixed but WHY do we use like 40 different languages just to make ours?

First language to have a name for something is the one that gets widely used, for the most part.

INTERconnected NETwork.

Because Latin and Greek didn't have all the words we needed Tongue

In the case of internet,
inter- across
net - referring to how a network of computers could be physically visualized as a grid of nodes, and cables connecting them, a little like any other kind of net.

Best answer, really. As society develops, so do the languages we use.

Always wondered where the word "Rotten" came from..

Btw. if I should explain where the internet came from it would be like this:
"It comes from the word Spiderweb / Net because you are able to stick things on there, and it stays there until you removes it"

Why is Latin named Latin?
Why are Aliens named Aliens.

It's all strange. Sad

A lot of it is based on aesthetic.
How does a word make you feel when you say it?
What message does it convey when you put a certain emphasis on it?
This is how most emotionally based words came about.

As far as technical words, most of them are multiple words that have been mutated and warped together.
that is where prefixes and suffixes and compound words come in to play.
