Ask Me Anything (About Design) - Nuance - 07-21-2013

The title is pretty self explanatory.

Ask me anything about graphic design.
How to make something, how long I have been doing, how to price something, how to break in to the industry, etc.

I will answer as many questions as I can.

When and how did you decide you wanted it to be your career?

I'm not sure of the exact date, but once day I was making a logo and realized that I had the potential to make art that would be seen by thousands of people and get paid for it.
So I decided to try and make a living from it.

Oh jeeze, I have no idea.
The amount of money I make a day varies a lot.
Some days I might make 500$ in a few hours, other days I might make nothing at all.

Do you feel like you make more money freelancing online than you would working for a company?

Absolutely not, however working for a design firm is incredibly boring.
Most jobs available at companies and firms are positions for production designers.

How do you price your work? And what's the best way to learn graphic design?

There are a lot of factors going in to the price of any designs.
The most important being your experience, the customer, and the size of the project.
Larger projects I usually charge an hourly wage, smaller projects are flat rates.

As for learning graphics design you should build a foundation that consists of an absolute knowledge of the tool you wish to work with. Once you have that the art is only limited by your creativity.
