AVG is terrible, I don't care what others think, I know what it has not detected from my tests. Free/Paid regardless, it didn't even rank in the AVComparatives report in the top 5. RE: wich one is the better antivirus? - 3r3bus - 05-28-2012 I like NOD32 and Avira personally. If you are looking for something quick and free, Microsoft Security Essentials is actually not that bad. RE: wich one is the better antivirus? - FunKx - 05-28-2012 I no longer use antivirus. They all suck

Unless you run Linux and you just are careless. RE: wich one is the better antivirus? - SENCComputers - 06-06-2012 Me I've tested many Anti-virus programs. From Avira to Vipre and honestly my top 5 for free and paid are: Free: 1. AVG 2. Avira 3. Avast 4. Comodo 5. Panda Cloud Paid: 1. NOD32 2. Kaspersky 3. Norton 4. MacAfee 5. Trend Micro Currently though I used Vipre on my desktop (Free Test for a year it's done good but a few things have slipped through) and AVG Pro (free also from a customer) on my Laptops. I recommend to my customers to go with NOD32 or Norton when they ask for a recommendation unless they want something free i say AVG but I always say you get what you pay for and to me when it comes to security of my computers a paid subscription is best. But I also recommend to them to always buy their anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall seperately as each company is good at one or the other but not always all the software. Comodo, good... Kaspersky, good, Norton as well (v2010+). Although, Trend Micro (they are okay), NOD32 just has a bunch of false positives based on a highly reputable report start of 2012, along with a few other sources i've seen and from personal experience with this AV. (Can't beat security though, even at the cost of a few more false positives, but they rely on that too much.) But Panda? AVG? McAfee? Are you sure? The best thing i've seen them do is block my file because of it's metadata... And AVG (free or paid) does not do hardly anything anyways. Not to mention how badly AVG set's itself up on your computer, it's basically like allowing someone to come in and fix your house because of say, a broken sink, they bring their tools in, drop them on the floors, leave their shoes on, and do all the damage on the side, along with being a rookie plumber. It doesn't do shit to be honest with you. RE: wich one is the better antivirus? - SENCComputers - 06-07-2012 You are right my experience with computer security is some what noobish seeing I just got back into the security side about a month ago after being away for 5 years. I was actually basing my opinion on the average user's computing needs. Not every person out there wants or needs the biggest and best software all the time most of the people I deal with on regualar basis use their computers only for email, office, and the occasional youtube video and most of them don't have internet at their home. So most of the time people I deal with only want the basic protection I run AVG on my computers right now due to the fact that well it was free to me the subscription ends in a week so i will be using a different program soon. And as for NOD32 I have yet to have a customer who has had a problem with it. As for Panda and Mcafee it has been well over 3-4 years since I even used them and when I did use them at the time they did very well most likely now though might be a different story seeing I've used Norton, Vipre, AVG, and NOD32 the past 2 years and haven't really had many problems with them. But I am new here and also newish to the security side of IT so I am here to learn as much as possible. RE: wich one is the better antivirus? - curtis5000 - 06-07-2012 Use Chinese AV...it is d best...download at 360.cn ... hard to find any crypted file that it wont detect RE: wich one is the better antivirus? - ArkPhaze - 06-07-2012 SENCComputers Wrote:Not every person out there wants or needs the biggest and best software all the time most of the people I deal with on regualar basis use their computers only for email, office, and the occasional youtube video and most of them don't have internet at their home This is where you need to realize something: the fact that this is what most people use their computers for makes these kinds of computer activities 100 times more provocative for hackers and such to create and target these kinds of 'systems' to infect these users. Not everyone who uses email is a genius. IF--they do not have internet, then how do they check their emails?... Regardless, if they don't, they can still be infected, but probably by someone in the same local network, which reduces the worry factor. Quote:So most of the time people I deal with only want the basic protection I run AVG on my computers right now due to the fact that well it was free to me the subscription ends in a week so i will be using a different program soon MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS is free... Although 1000 times better than AVG. 1) It doesn't f*ck up your computer because it doesn't load everything off into every range of your computer's filesystem and registry (and neglect to delete files when it's done with them and even upon an uninstall) 2) It actually does it's job, AVG does not hardly do anything, it's lame, i've seen cases where the only chance of detection against some of the files i've had on a machine was by analyzing string information in the metadata for the PE headers. (Even YOU though--use AVG though on your computers? :S...) Quote:And as for NOD32 I have yet to have a customer who has had a problem with it. It's not that I was concerned about, I never said it was bad, I said it relies majorly on just detecting anything at all it finds suspicious rather than analyzing what it actually does. It makes about 70% more accusations than most other top end AV's, which results in respectively a larger percentage more false positives. Quote:As for Panda and Mcafee it has been well over 3-4 years since I even used them and when I did use them at the time they did very well Malware updates everyday, new things come out, and those people are not on top of the database to make sure they are keeping track of this malicious outsource. Not to mention McaFee i've seen (along with AVG) is responsible for some user's BSOD's because of the way it interacts with calling to certain functions, and getting back to the kernel. Quote:I've used Norton, Vipre, AVG, and NOD32 the past 2 years and haven't really had many problems with them Norton 2010+ versions are good, mainly because the only issues people have had with Norton and giving it a bad rep, were from RAM/CPU consumption (which dramatically improved in v2010 and above--however skeptics obviously just hold a biased opinion about Norton in general after seeing it's older aliases), plus it was rated one of the better for Firewall and Autoprotection at the start of 2012, along with BitDefender, however I'd prefer Norton, because of it's vast configurability, and GREAT Firewall. I haven't seen a better and more configurable firewall... Quote:But I am new here and also newish to the security side of IT so I am here to learn as much as possible. Nothing you said fooled me lol, I could tell. |
