As a long standing member of Sinister.ly (possibly one of the oldest members left) I can tell you now, it's very rare that Oni makes a mistake. Sure, if it were me I would of had a more recent backup than a month but I'm rather sure Oni wasn't expecting to lose access to that data any time soon which is understandable. I stand by Oni in every decision and mistake he makes because I know, no matter what happens, he's a good administrator. Nothing you or anyone else says can change that. I've been here little over a month and have regularly encountered issues. The site has been down as often as it has been up. errors in the software. now lost data. And from what I've read after I got here, you just experienced significant downtime due to losing a host. then people leaving en-masse because they weren't happy, including 2 staff stepping down. You claim that he rarely makes a mistake but at this rate, and your statements of standing by him no matter what, that you're also wearing those Oni-blinders. Cause quite frankly, you seem to think that I am trying to convince you of that. When in reality I am pointing out the facts. And the facts speak for themselves. If you have ever had the chance to run your own forum, you will know how hard and time-taxing it is and it's even worse when you have users like yourself calling him a shit admin.Yes, I am an experienced webmaster, and that does include forums. And yes it does work like that. If you have invested time and money into a site and use it as a source of income (He clearly stated in that letter that he depends on the lost VPS as a source of income), the FIRST thing you do is protect it. That means backups. If it includes a heavily trafficked website then you make backups more frequently. It's really not a complicated processes. It's also something ANY decent admin would do. And the process, even if he isn't using some sort of control panel, is as simple as running a cron job to A) expoort the database and zip it with the site files B) scp or rsync the files to another server. It's a few minutes of time at best. My suspicion is that you are not an experienced webmaster and are therefor taking his excuses in stride. the reality is that he has no excuse. He can blame police and criminals all he wants but the responsibility to protect and secure the data was entirely his. And it was not an unreasonable task or financial hardship to do so. You can say he's a great admin. but he has yet to prove it. All he has is a bunch of kids kissing his ass saying he is. Look at it this way. Had it not been the police. Had someone hacked and deleted the database and files we would be in the EXACT same situation. Is it an unreasonable expectation that someone might target and deface a hacking site? In my experience hackers LOVE defacing hacker sites. So this site quite literally has a target on its back. There is all sorts of ways that data can become lost or corrupt. Not planning to recover the data is a noob mistake, regardless of how long you planned to use the service. The fact that anyone considers this acceptable practice, acceptable loss, competent administration is simply amazing to me. It indicates a certain amount of brainwashing even. Or complete ignorance on website administration RE: Blackout - Cake - 11-14-2014 (11-14-2014, 09:53 AM)Oni Wrote: although the majority isn't my fault.yes it is. why would you host a big forum on a vps? RE: Blackout - Kilshot666 - 11-15-2014 I was wondering what happened to the server and now I know. I tried logging on around that time only to find the pastebin message. These are truly dark times for the internet and free media and information.... I'm not going to sit here and break down all of this to show you how much illegitimacy is contained in that post. To be honest, the entire post is incoherent. I never said he doesn't make mistakes, but due to how much time he actually spends looking after the forum, the hiccups are few. He made a mistake in not making sure he had a backup, move on. The fact that you're getting so wound up about this is unbelievable, even resulting to pettyness (calling me a kid, even though I'm most likely older or around the same age as you). Also, I have quite a bit of experience in web mastery. Some of what you said though, does make sense and I do agree with you. Just realize Oni is human, he makes mistakes. Suck it up. Spoiler:
Oh, also, I'm not "riding" Oni either. Oni and I are actually very good friends, no "riding" necessary. RE: Blackout - roger_smith - 11-15-2014 @Oni screwed up by not having backups. It sucks, but it is what it is. He wasn't expecting LE to seize the server. Granted, that's the entire point of backups, but I've lost my own data due to failure to backup. We all learn that lesson at one time or another, and it sucks, and it's brutal, and we become better admins from it, or we are doomed to repeat the same mistake. Most of the regulars of SL will continue to participate, and hope that we some day get all our data back. Sadly, we likely either A)won't, B)Won't for a long, long time. I hope I'm wrong but I know how things go with Feds/LE. In the end, the core community here is strong and we'll rebuild and carry on. We can all learn a very valid and hard hitting lesson from this experience, and grow from it. As they say, "Shit happens". Let the rebuilding continue... Once the oni gains access this forum will be merge with the old one.

Sorry, in my experience with LE/Fed/Etc seizure, it can tend to be a LONG time to get your stuff back, if you ever do. I'm certainly hoping we get our shit back from the europol fags, especially since we're collateral damage in their seizure, but they definitely DGAF about us, so we'll get it back if/when the decide to, and no sooner. It sucks, but like I said, shit happens. We'll get over it and move on, and if we get our stuff back, then that's great. I'm just not the optimistic type unfortunately. it's been said, but Fuck Europol. Just take a disk image you fucking idiots, not the whole damn box. I can't imagine how stressful this may be. |
