I recognize some icons in Windows 3.1, which I think were in the Windows XP icons list or something similar (the most familiar icon being the object packager one). What kind of stuff can that media player handle?

Yes, using Notepad & MS Paint. But upon executing them, making yourself a cup of coffee and on your return they should be fully loaded.

On a serious note, probably zero. At the time of this post, I'm navigating on my external trying to locate the ISO of Windows 3.1. I can upload It and you can Install It on a VM.

Along with It's privacy Issues, ever since they've removed the functionality of disabling Windows Updates via the Control Panel, my views on Microsoft changed.

I haven't performed an update In over a decade, and never will. I'm glad this thread has been generated. It's a pleasure reading those In support of disabling updates and the methods used In doing so.
