I'm not even angry... I'm being so sincere right now. RE: Post your Ctrl+V - Losi - 09-02-2014 Lyman Ward: Lyman Ward is the narrator of the book. He rides around in an electric wheelchair because of a disease that makes his bones get stiff. Lyman is writing a book off some personal letters he got. Rodman Ward: Rodman is Lyman Ward’s son. He is way different than his dad and they can’t see eye to eye. Leah Ward: Leah is his daughter. Oliver Ward: Oliver is Lyman’s grandfather. He is an engineer who worked at mines. Susan Burling: Susan is a writer. She married Oliver Ward and moved west. She also might be lesbian. Thomas Hudson: Thomas, Susan and Augusta were best friends in college. Then he marries Augusta. Augusta Hudson: Augusta is best friends with Susan; she might be a lesbian as well. She marries Thomas. Ed and Ada Hawkes: Ada helps Lyman around the house. Lyman also watches baseball with the Hawkes. Shelly Rasmussen: Shelly is Lyman’s summer secretary. A. Pg.15 “My antecedents support me here as the old wisteria at the corner supports the house.” On an immediate story level, the vines are like his maid/helper Ava. Without Ava, he can’t be independent from his kids. He can’t take a bath or do his dishes. On a universal level, the vines are like his book. The book he’s writing keeps him occupied and busy. It supports his sanity. B. Pg.18 “We live in time and through it, we build our huts in its ruins, or used to, and we cannot afford all these abandonings.” Lyman’s talking about how younger people are learning from their ancestors and their history. The newer generation only looks forward, not in all directions. No one wants to dwell on the past because it can bring up unwanted memories. C. Pg.24 “It is the angle I am aiming for myself, and I don’t mean the rigid angle at which I rest in this chair. I wonder if you ever reached it.” On the immediate story level, she means where nothing in the present will randomly fall out of order. Globally, she means the angle at where she can be at peace. The angle of repose is where the force downwards is equal to the force by the slope. So she wants to be able to stay in one position and not be all over the place. D. Pg.28 “I run by routine, I accept from hired women services that I would never have accepted from my wife before I became a grotesque.” Lyman is talking about how his life is a routine. He wakes up early to work on his book, then the pain comes and he can’t work anymore. Then Ava comes over and helps him around the house and to take a bath. Globally, he wouldn’t want to be such a burden on his wife because he is disabled and elderly. He can’t take a bath by himself. E. Pgs.25, 31 & 41: How does Stegner use the metaphor of the Doppler Effect? Stegner uses the metaphor with one’s future. It sounds way louder when it comes straight at you, but when you step back it’s calmer. So it means to sometimes take a step back from life. F. Pgs. 33, 54, 55 & 56: Discuss Stegner’s examination of the genteel aristocracy of old New York. Predict what theme you suspect he is working to establish (details). G. Pg. 60: Explain Susan’s surprise at Oliver. H. Pgs. 62-66: Examine the surfacing of a conflict between Susan and Augusta. Make predictions. (I'm doing a report right now.)
