I don't like Attack on Titan.
It feels like Claymore just with big meaty monsters. "Oh this guy is strong and intimidating because he's big, and look at our totally not cliche characters!".
The only thing it has somewhat going for it, all my opinion by the by, is the plot, and it's just not THAT great that it can carry itself.
Claymore makes use of the setting better.
I can name multiple animes with much better characters/character development.
I have suspicions that Titans are just popular because they resemble zombies ( IE: Mindlessness, eating flesh. ), and zombies are the big thing now still.
It's mediocre at best. Could be a lot worse ( Looking at SAO ), but I just don't understand the hype it receives, at least in my area, anyone mind explaining what I'm missing?

It's not grand or groundbreaking at all in any way, I agree, I just like it.
Claymore is great too, especially the manga. Which reminds me, I have to catch up on it since it's been almost half a year since reading it.

Other people I know are absolute fanatics about it and have difficulty believing I really don't like it. I find the reaction kind of dumb, but overly common.

I've never seen it, actually. I heard it was a really good mainstream but I haven't bothered with it yet.
