Private Internet Access provides several layers of protection at a very minimal cost. I think it's completely worth it to just fork over a few bucks a month to ensure anonymity.

A lot of free versions still offer the same level of encryption/protection as It's paid counterpart, with the downside being limited amount of servers, disconnecting every few hows, limited bandwidth etc.
