I can always upload the podcast mp3 to SoundCloud and have you stream it there

I mean, the "video" is one 720p picture and it's wrapped with H.264 and compressed by YouTube, so afaik you're effectively loading a single image and streaming the audio. I don't know how much bandwidth converting to mp3 would save, but it'd be kind of interesting to find out.

No, but as @zenith mentioned, uploading the audio to SoundCloud or something would work.
