I don't really approve of rep. If you make someone upset, then they bestow a negative reputation upon you. Which is why I hate people who judge by reputation, but that's just my opinion.

They are important in the sense they can show someones past dealings, helpfulness and generally if they are an asshole. I like having a reasonably high reputation as it shows you are a notable member who has helped people in the past. Kind of like a insignificant nerd trophy.
