R is reverse. Usually 5th is Over Drive and 4th is 1:1.

He mentioned "most standard cars are equipped with a 5 speed transmission", with standard being the operative word here, meaning not all cars.

In my locality, there are vehicles with a 3 speed manual transmission (4 If you Include reverse), with the stick located on the steering wheel column.

That's still an automatic but with first, second, third, and drive. I know what you are talking about.

A paddle shifter looks like this:

It's basically a semi-automatic, but you go up and down gears with paddles, instead of a stick.

That is a good insight. I, however, cannot afford a car with paddle shifters. Just look how nice the interior in your picture is.
