Apple gives you free OS upgrades, but only after you've bought their Mac or Macbook which is like three times more expensive than a normal PC. Honestly, Apple is a horrible example for something like this, also, unlike Linux, OSX is not open source.

This is not exactly true, a BIG part of iOS and OS X is actually open source, and can be found on Apple's website.
