I made a thread about my configuration with a custom xsession: http://www.hackcommunity.com/Thread-Using-Xmonad-in-Ubuntu

The gnome panels take too much space. I already made them as small as possible and removed the bottom panel -- still.

In this part I don't get what you're talking about.

I mean that the workspaces shown in gnome don't have a preview. Usually they have, but not in xmonad. I also prefer to see how I named the workspaces (i.e. irc, coding, mail ...).
Using xmobar the way I did I see the names of the workspaces that have some programs open, and don't have to look manually if I forgot to close a program somewhere.

The gnome-panels are too high and they can't be made smaller than 19 pixels or something like that. They waste too much space of my screen.

Well, with Gnome, by hovering the workspace's icon you see the name, but I get what you're talking about.

If it was for this only, I'd stay with Gnome. Considering all of the other issues concerned, though, it's understandable the choice of leaving XMonad with Gnome.
