RE: Linux VS Windows - Jammy Phan - 05-12-2014 Sincerely hello everyone! Anyone can guide me to use Linux because I using a other OS since a long time ago? I need to know how to use Linux highest-effectively and most-simply for maximum security, maximum safe,super-high total system performance,super-high total system productivity. Yes, I need my computer system to achieve both minimal effective dose and maximum safe dose of it. Sincerely thanks for listened me! We have an entire sub forum dedicated to Linux, if you are interested in learning how to use it efficiently you should spend some time in there RE: Linux VS Windows - Netero_mybb_import16981 - 05-12-2014 How can you judge an OS ?! That's a question that I ask of you. I have used Windows XP , Vista, 7 , 8 ,8.1 ,Mac OS ,Fedora , Linux mint, Backtrack , Ubuntu and some more. Personally I will advice you to increase your knowledge in your favorite/most used OS & try to see what else is out there. Each OS has its own benefits ,I personally have a dual boot System & a live USB containing a bootable Ubuntu. The question of which one is better, well that depends on your need and what you feel best for you. For many activities such as Designing, Editing, Montage & Gaming ..etc I use Windows ,the reason is there are a lot of programs supporting my need such as Photoshop, HitFilm ...etc not mentioning games. For programming in some languages I prefer Linux/Unix Systems, they are more stable and I really enjoy Linux more than Windows. If you want to have a completely different experience I suggest working on Linux/Unix systems, in the beginning it will be a little hard for you "depending on which Linux flavor you want to use" because the environment is different and you might have to use the terminal/command line to do some of the jobs that you want. And there are some things that people think Linux/Unix system don't support. One of them is Gaming, true most of Linux/Unix systems don't support Call of Duty or DOTA 2 ..etc , but some of the Distributions were made with that feature in mind. And here is a misunderstanding of people in general, personally I think the future is in Linux for us programmers, people say if Linux/Unix System are more powerful & are free why don't people use them, the reason is simple most of the programs written for Linus based OS are free. And most people won't spend a lot of time creating an application for an OS which won't give me financial benefit. And I encourage you to try a Linux based OS, and my suggestion is Linux Mint, it's a noob friendly. So far a lot of "Windows vs Linux" have been around, many of which resulted in a (long) list of users' personal opinions. That's it, personal opinions, which are a good thing to share, but do not serve the purpose of understanding if and which OS is better. For everyday life, any OS can do the job. In the 60s, few kilobytes of RAM were enough to guide starships (see Apollo Guidance Computer); nowadays we have RAMs one million times bigger: we can do whatever we want, even with a resource wasting OS. In order to "judge" an OS, some kind of metric is needed, and the idea of "the best OS" is vacuous: "the best OS for a given purpose" should be the question to ask... Some metrics I can think to are:
As final consideration, I use Windows for games, GNU/Linux for everything else. By the way, as far as I know, many supercomputers run a GNU/Linux distribution (see JSC - JUDGE (and the others), Cineca - Eurora), and I'm sure they have strong motivations for this choice. And... Spoiler:"Linux" is a kernel, you probably meant "GNU Linux"! ![]() RE: Linux VS Windows - letitshutdown - 05-22-2014 i won't say linux box is a better os than windows bcos both are made for there purposes and on different platforms. for everything on linux box is treated as a file, while on windows, is a different perspective of the os based on user, windows which is user friendly, is more much different to manipulate, except through it understanding of it's shell and batch scripting. RE: Linux VS Windows - gioo1331 - 05-28-2014 Linux is better for hacking than windows. Windows is best for graphics, games and other software, not for hacking. RE: Linux VS Windows - Yung Lean - 06-07-2014 As someone said both OS has advantages and disadvantages. From my side I think Linux is more for working or personal uses sadly it has limited amount of software for example Linux is a pain for graphics since Adobe don't want to release their products on Linux... Linux is more used for running servers. Almost every big company runs their servers on Linux due to its small resource usage and open source code. I personally like Linux I like its interface and how it works. and here is a little video about Linux ![]() RE: Linux VS Windows - erpicci - 06-10-2014 (06-07-2014, 07:49 PM)Clevaro Wrote: it has limited amount of software for example Linux is a pain for graphics since Adobe don't want to release their products on Linux...And we probably just don't need them... About the video, I'm a bit confused. It refers to Linux both as an operative system (which is wrong), both as a kernel (which is true). Also, at 1:40, it compares the developing time of a Linux kernel against the developing time of "other operating systems", which does not make sense (like comparing building time of a engine against building time of a car). Moreover, GNU/Linux OSs like Debian, CentOS or Scientific Linux actually take years to be relased (while others like Fedora or Ubuntu have planned releases). Sadly, about at 2:10, they do not mention those static analysis techniques they use to prove software correctness, they just talk about some senior developerse who give a look at the code... :Not-Amused: Probably this video is simply "too soft"? RE: Linux VS Windows - Devastion - 06-18-2014 Windows 7 vs Ubuntu (last release) Both have same requirements Windows 7 is good at gaming (better performance), more drivers (for webcams, mices, keyboards, headsets etc.) and easier to use (just a bit easier) Ubuntu is good for surfing, better security (you aren't god, you are still hackable), better mutlitasking (& better UI ?) Windows 7 is ~200$ (depends on the windows), but Ubuntu is free. All about what you like more.

As for drivers for the last few years they have done extremely well IMO and it's now quite rare to not have something just work (unless you are using non standard hardware and then I totally agree with you) Gaming is coming along too but again you're correct Windows is far better in that department. Lastly I have to disagree with you entirely on the UI, I hate it  but that's just my opinion, besides you are free to install any window manager you like that's the beauty of Linux I much prefer the XFCE desktop myself. |
