Live action strayed so far from the source that I couldn't force myself to watch it, but maybe some people enjoyed it.

There's actually some really good adaptations out there... Rurouni Kenshin and Great Teacher Onizuka both had great live actions. Unfortunately live actions like Death Note and Cowboy Bebop deviate so far from the source material, it's unintelligible.
Generally when live actions go properly, you can tell the writers and original producers are working together. When it was discussed how little Watanabe/original producers were involved, most people dialed down their optimism.
Haha, go in with low expectations and you can never be disappointed. I'll have to check out the Ruroni Kenshin and Onizuka live actions. I've never actually seen those. Thanks for the rec!
