To my knowledge, It was created by a couple of guys In their early 20s.

I'm not sure whether they were Involved In the Minecraft community- you'd know best.
Yeah, it was used for them to hit off Minecraft servers because that's the game the group played together which is pretty common on Minecraft due to it's toxic community- they offered to hit off/ransomed big Minecraft servers in turn for money. They didn't realize how big their botnet actually was until they were able to hit off OVH-hosted servers and got themselves on the FBI's radar. Crazy story, you'd think that Mirai would be some country-vs-country global cyber attack but it was just a bunch of people playing Minecraft.

Here's a quick source if you'd like to read up on it anytime: https://www.wired.com/story/mirai-botnet-minecraft-scam-brought-down-the-internet/

People praise this kind of thing as a brilliant hack but in reality it was just a simple social engineering attack (which by the way was stupid to be trying to pull while on the FBI's radar already.)

Law enforcement agencies do In fact hire hackers/ex-hackers, particularly those with an exceptional set of skills.

This thread Is almost 3 months old, and there doesn't seem to be any further developments.

I've performed an In depth Google search to no avail. If convicted, I'd love to read what happens to him thereafter.
