Yeah Mint is a really good first distro - it does have some issues but not ones that should effect the normal user. It's light enough not to slow everything down (and seems way faster for most users than windows) and it also runs most packages/software fine. Plus one of the big things is that it has loads of documentation/forums for if you get stuck.

For any cracking/hacking I use Kali - there are other pentesting distros but it's the most mature in my opinion.
For a really small install/boot distro  I use SliTaz as it seems to always work without problems.  

Loads of other distros and there are loads of good ones, but I do get a bit annoyed when the distro is basically just a slight reskin/package change from others.

As far as this "debacle" goes it just seems like 1 article suggesting that Mint should just become an Ubuntu flavor has a bunch of Mint users up in arms. Interesting conversation to be had but not a debacle that would actually have an impact on how I use the OS I don't think.

They are definitely a bit more difficult than Mint to get started with. The new Ubuntu versions are pretty easy to work with, but I've always found they're pretty heavy on the hardware. Have you given ubuntu a go?

I want to try some of the more specialist/wierd linux distros out too - i've got a few old machines which I might try them out on. Anyone have any ideas of good ones? I know of the North Korean Red Star OS which sounds fun to try.

My only experience was the time I tried to install Ubuntu years ago and panicked thinking I bricked my computer because no USB input was working and I was basically stuck with an uninstalled copy of Ubuntu. Ended up fixing it by using a PS/2 keyboard but haven't tried install Ubuntu since lol

I personally fiddled around a bit with Mint, OpenSUSE, Ubuntu, Kali, Backtrack, Debian, etc, and honestly still haven't decided on one to use lol.

Will be getting a shitty laptop soon and will try out one of the lighter ones, maybe Puppy Linux, 300MB wow.
