I don't gamble at all. The last time I gambled or bet was when my friend wanted to bet on if Ronaldo would leave. He'd give me $10 if Ronaldo stayed and I'd give him $10 if Ronaldo left. I wasn't going to take his money anyway because he doesn't have a lot. Ronaldo ended up leaving and he asked me like 4 times for the ten bill. Rule of thumb: Don't gamble with broke people or else you'll feel bad if you win and they'll pressure you to give them money.

My stepfather has been playing the lottery since he migrated to my country (50+ years), each and every week and although he's won on a number of occasions, nothing major such as first prize. I couldn't possibly put a figure on the amount of money he's down/lost.
And then you hear of those who've entered for the very first time, and they hit the jackpot.

I went through a phase where I was constantly betting NSP here also! However for the majority of it I was winning.

I clearly remember this.
I don't consider NSP as a form of gambling. Even If you lose, you haven't lost anything- It's not acquired via any form of value.

The Issue with the majority of (addicted) gamblers, Is that they have a few winning streaks and believe there'll hit the jackpot at some point.
It's a case of "One Is never enough, and a thousand Is never too many".

That's right, for example, Archie Karas story https://bovegas.com/blog/big-wins/breaking-bank-stories-land-based-casinos/. This is precisely the case when a person could not stop playing. He won a lot of money, but did not finish and played until he lost everything. It lasted until he was caught in fraud and banned from playing in American casinos.
