Like 90% of the people I know are friends of mine on the Internet. That being said we probably chat on a daily basis. Just as often as I'd talk to someone in real life.

My brother had a few internet friends he'd meet up with IRL. They were pretty cool, different people from around the world and they still keep contact (they have a FB group) even after they shutdown their forum

I suppose I don't have many irl friends either. After moving to University I didn't stay in contact well with high school friends and I seriously fell out with the people that were my so-called friend/housemates at University. I think I am happier maintaining a more distant friendship with the remainder of who I consider irl friends. I'm about to move out of the country as well, so maybe that is for the better.

It's crazy how the internet brings people of all different backgrounds together, based on the 'internet personality' one makes for themselves. Still amazes me everytime I'm around the interwebs

Maybe people open up more online, and when you've known someone for a while (even on the internet) you feel comfortable enough to stay that way.

I would expect people to act different too, but I suppose you are correct in saying that once you know someone pretty well online there isn't much reason to change who they are irl if one were to meetup. I've never had this experience myself, but that makes sense
