I'm not a Ubuntu user (I used Ubuntu as an example as it's a popular choice for the target audience) so I can't really answer that question properly, but I would probably go for a LTS (long term support) version.

Linux's popularity stems from it's stability flexibility and security, further more Linux is open source which fits the mentality of hackers. You can freely download the source code see how it works and make any changes you want to it (even share those changes with friends/strangers if you so wish)

But to be honest the 'preferred' OS is the one that fits the user and the task it is intended for
