I have used Xubuntu on all my systems since 2007. Its my OS of choice. I previously used KDE/Gnome on RedHat back in the 2001-2004 era (Back when RedHat was still RedHat and not Fedora). But I hated both Gnome and KDE
I find LXDE to be ugly. But XFCE looks decent and uses far fewer resources than the major ones - a perfect balance to me between experience and efficiency.

Im a fan of KDE but im not a fan of pure ubuntu OS's. I use ElementaryOS Luna on my laptop which is just brilliant. I used to have a debian install with KDE but it just seemed a little too unstable
