If you think that's cluttered you should see my friend's desktop... He has probably 3-4 years of received skype files on his desktop. I estimate around 2000 files not in folders. He uses a tool called Fences to hide them all though and he now has a gaming pc so he doesn't use his laptop as much.

OT: I will post screenshots once my pc is fixed. I know how to make my desktop look fairly smexy xD

I think a good tactic to use is to get Quick Launch and put all program shortcuts in that then you don't need them on the desktop.
That should remove about 80 of the files on your desktop.
My desktop has around 120 items on it and none of them are program shortcuts. Still organizing.
