Why do you suggest to stay away from them? I just want to know to pros and cons of Debian and Slackware

Ubuntu is much more trouble then it's worth... Also, the new wm for it is horrible.

Linux MINT is OK. But you don't learn as much about linux using it.

Pros of debian: Pretty easy to set up. But you can still have more control over your computer & and learn more about GNU/Linux.
cons: I had some trouble with setting up my video card. Also, apt-get get's messed up sometimes.

Pros of Slackware: You do everything from scratch.
Cons: The package manager doesn't do dependency checking.
