If you looking for performance the OnePlus 3t is just as equivalent. However, the 5 shows a big difference in the camera. It's still a hit and miss camera but it has better hits.

I'm not so sure there's a free app that can do that, maybe a paid app? I was looking for one myself a few phones back

After two days researching, like you said, only paid apps is possible to do that. OnePlus doesn't offer such an app. I got the messages transferring by following this guide: https://www.androidphonesoft.com/resources/transfer-data-between-phone-and-oneplus-one.html
