So basically I have a question what you think about this. (I know in each country the laws are different, just asking for thoughts).

A few weeks back, I was running to the bus stop, because I had only 5 minutes untill my bus would be there. Now my brother was cycling behind me (also pretty fast), when we were at the bus stop he said to me "blue" (cops). So I looked back and yes indeed there were cops driving behind me & my brother all the time. Luckily I didn't have any weed on me, neither did my brother.

We looked them straight in the eyes, but they moved on. Or so we thought. They turned pretty quickly, stopped and stepped towards us. Than out of nowhere, without asking any other questions like "why were you running" or anything like that, they just asked "ID's please". The bus was already there ATM.

So we gave the ID's, they wrote it down. When suddenly the cops says I need to give my wallet. He says: "Do you have anything illegal on you, like cannabis or something?". I replied: "No, of course not. Sir can you please hurry, we really need to get on this bus. My brother has to work and I have to go too." Than the cop replied: "Yeah sure, 1 minute". So the other cop was writing us down, and the other one was searching me (not my brother, just me). After that we stepped on the bus and they left.

I think they didn't handle it right, it was also very emberassing because my work is litterally next to the bus stop.

TL;DR; Do you think cops can ask someone's ID and search them because they are running? Maybe I was just jogging, or maybe I was just trying to catch my bus. In my opinion they did not have such right.

I know this might be pretty weird, but are you African American because if so that was probably the reason why.

I mean no offence, but I feel like that is something I've only ever heard American's ask.

Anyway, I suspect there might have been other motives for them to stop you (perhaps you happen to match a description of a current suspect or something else was going on). However, the fact that there was NO explanation is pretty stupid, especially with the extent of their search.

I've had few experiences with cops in the US thus far (uber driver got pulled over for not stopping at STOP signs type things). Those experiences seemed perfectly in order and the cops even took the time to apologise to me for the disruption. Cops in the UK near my old Uni would do rounds to check on the new students moving in and gave reminders about noise levels etc, but were generally very pleasant and always explained when they asked for ID or anything else. I feel like some cops could use better training though.

Yes, this is pretty weird, but in America, it's usually over race or sex that police pull people over. This just shows how corrupt some parts of the policemen force is.

Definitely so.

Times change, so too does police protocol, therefore training must be ongoing and not just one-off.

That's the truth. Cool

Well If I was a cop, I'd probably do the same, but that would be damn stupid.
They're just thinking too high.

I'm totally with you there. Although, this is when we start getting into why they don't have updated training (experienced teachers/funding -> taxpayers money etc).

RE: Getting pulled over because running? - Shinoa - 05-29-2017

Is it possible they thought you were running from them and got suspicious since they were behind you?

RE: Getting pulled over because running? - Ecks - 05-29-2017

Sadly they spotted you running with someone on a bike tailing, this is instant suspicion from them.
Your brother noticed and told you which caused you to turn and look at them, this confirmed suspicion.
You showed fear and thus gave them power over the situation, you have a right to deny any law enforcement officer your information.
You have a right to know your rights and to use them, you did not have to allow them shit, all you had to say was "am I under arrest?" or "am I being detained" if they answer yes to either state "why am I under arrest" or "why am I being detained" and do not rest until you get an answer, many "blue" will try to dodge answering these question until they can get any scrap of evidence to book you and by answering "no" they legally give you the right to leave the situation and if they answer "yes" you can keep quiet and repeat only "I want to see my lawyer".

Yes there's so many organizations and entities that require attention.

Unless management strategies are formulated, Implemented and adhered to thereafter, It will be extremely difficult to keep track of all requirements.
