I don't really think it's a new genre, as people have always enjoyed the soundtracks. Only album I'd actually go out of my way to download is for Cowboy Bebop, as it had some neat tracks and was critically acclaimed.

Well, it's been given it's own categories and such. In terms of whether it's considered its own genre world wide (given the three sub-genres too), I'm not so sure. I suspect popularity and time will tell.
On the Cowboy Bebop note - I've certainly spent days with the opening stuck in my head! xD

Ive downloaded the soundtrack for Ore Twintails ni Narimatsu, as I really liked it. The show being a loving parody of super sentai, the soundtrack is metal.
