IRC would not be better. IRC would be awful and dead just like it was in the past attempts

On a serious note, I don't see why members overlook Discord. It's functional and serves It's purpose very well Indeed.

I still remember the good old days of Telnet and It's Insecurities.
In a hacking environment, Telnet would be catastrophic.
