The site has switched to Google shield (had no idea it existed) supposedly the sites back up...
There were supposedly messages in majority of the junk packets smacking the site saying "FreeAppleJ4ck"
He was a co-owner of the vDos service. Supposedly AppmeJ4ck and his partner were arrested by Israeli police following Krebs' exposé.
Towards the end of his sire being held off 666 GB/s wasn't even the highest attack lol there was one guy who hit him for over 900 GB/S...
The total of the attack reached a staggereling combined total of 1156 GB/S consistently from someone's "botnet" lol that shit is fucking nuts. I honestly feel it was several people with several bnets but if some one hits for over 1.2 TB/S that is fucking SWEET!

Could someone explain who this guy is? I'm not really into much technology news, but ever since this happened there has been so many people saying thank god. What kind of things did this guy do?

He is a journalist whom runs his own blog. He would interview people and turn and twist their words to get them locked up / fired / etc to make his stories more popular. He is known for slanderous comments about others for his gain
A lot of people don't realize is that he was being ddosed due to him getting 2 people arrested as mentioned in my above post.

I'm not saying smash kids IPS for shits and giggles (except fk, if I could I would smash the shit out of that site lol) But when people are like "ooh I'm a tough guy on the internet" or "I'm going to pick on you cause I'm a ebully" or if some one deserves it then yeah give the good ole router a little bumperoo lol

Again as I mentioned above his site never really shut down officially. The servers (I believe) he was on were free (probably a sponsorship) and they decided to discontinue his services due to band with usuage / traffic from attack. Google shield quickly offered their services claiming to do " what no one else will" naturally a publicity thing. His site was back up and running shortly after the initial attack....
