I would recommend to perform a service scan and maybe do some OS fingerprinting before connecting to the VPS server. Also I would recommend using a VPN or Socks proxy before connecting.

In reality my project would work optimally with over 10 servers but it is safe to say realistically that I shouldn't expect to be given 10 servers for free, let alone one, so I would be eternally grateful if I can at least get one server to test things out.

You would think that when someone calls someone else a moron, they at least know the difference between your and you're, but I guess not. Looks like the self-proclaimed internet god himself has been triggered.
You used a public SSH bruteforcer and what you have are a bunch of honeypots. Get over it. Anything you have that isn't a honeypot has most likely been bruteforced by 200 other self-proclaimed internet gods such as yourself who lack the skill necessary to get actual roots.

1. Why on earth would you put on your twitter account "currently hacking the cia", really? That's the most skidiest thing I've ever heard.
2. Please don't try to root servers, if you even can't keep your own server running, that doesn't look like you're skilled. At all.
