He probably stubbed it in such a way that it got fucked up. Thats probably the only way that it would get THAT it would probably die.

it doesn't die it just regrows. It is also there to protect you from infections.

I've never lost a toenail, so I wouldn't know. But I have lost a fingernail, and it hurt SOOO bad.
