There's no right or wrong, but more so based on your overall usability pertaining to compatibility of devices, software and expectations of your computational tasks and needs.
If the Linux platform suits and fulfills your requirements, then be It as It may. I read you're having Issues with VMs. Don't select a VM that's dependent on SLAT (Second Level Address Translation), hence requires a supported CPU. If It's solely for running a stand-alone OS and nothing more, I'll state the obvious and suggest to go for a basic VM such as Virtual PC 2007 or VirtualBox.

Wine is a compatibility layer. It can run somethings while others don't work at all. Wine has a rich database of applications and ratings that should allow you to see what works and what doesn't in applications.
For example;

Photoshop CS6 should work perfectly. If you click on the CS6 listing on that page, you will see what you need to do for Photoshop to work well. Platinum is the best, garbage is the worst rating, then you have silver and gold in between.
This is something you should always do before trying yourself. As if a solution exists, it is always better to use that instead of trying to cook up a half baked method yourself.
But don't expect everything to work out of the box. Some users do and get pissed off because their shitty RAT doesn't work properly. You probably can tweak Wine so applications run, but they don't always work perfectly and there can be a lot of bugs in it.
Bottom line;
It doesn't always work. In my experience, it is more likely not to than to work. But with time, it will work. Read up on the AppDB before trying to install an application.

Wine is good now-a-days, but just dual boot windows with linux and avoid steam OS.
Use ubuntu for a few weeks then jump to something more advanced.

Okay, so I've had ago and I totally spat my dummy out and went back to Windows, I don't think I'm completely ready for Linux yet I may revisit this later on in the year

I'm not totally abandoning Linux, I will be running various VMs but I'm not yet skilled enough to make the complete transition.
