I'd give Beyond Earth a 8/10 as a game, and 2/10 as an addition to the Civilization series. I've played quite a bit of Beyond Earth. As much as it pains me, I still get addicted.

I feel like Beyond Earth does get better the longer you play, that's just what I've heard from people who do play it

I agree with you that it's not a great addition to the Civilization series, I feel like if they said it was a space civilization game then people won't have that expectation of the game to be like Civ 5 and it might have gotten better reviews for the game.
