Yes, version one was shut down due the the weakness of site creators passwords (it was shut down with a weakness on his part rather than a weakness in tor)

Version 2 is now up and running fine.
The majority of products are illegal however, isn't it the same principle of P2P? It is used primarily for copyrighted material but is an outstanding way to share files.

I see SilkRoad (this tutorial can be used with other websites, it outlines anonymity and BTC etc) as an important way to be able use the internet anonymously

And there are non-illegal products there, as well as illegal. But for me, wrongly illegal.
