RE: What do you feel about reps?? - Deque - 04-11-2013 I see it as a nice way to tell people what you think about them. I mean, I never would just write a PM and say: Hey, I like you because of this ... Other than that I agree that is has a lot to do with popularity. RE: What do you feel about reps?? - Linuxephus™ - 04-11-2013 Reputation delineates a number of things: The Member's popularity. The Member's level of knowledge. The Member's interaction with the Community as a whole. The Member's level of trustworthiness based upon actions noted by the Community as a whole. The Member's level of respect as judged by the Community as a whole. The Member's level of reliability and what actions he's performed for the Community as a whole to the benefit of the Community. The Member's ability for conflict resolution. What is popularity? Popularity is the state or condition of being liked, admired, or supported by many people. Now if we view this in the context it is written, we see a pattern forming where the very description of popularity is defined by the above criteria that motivates (infer "gives reason to...") each and every one of us to Rate another of our Community based upon the quality of what we see with-in that individual to define the merits of that individual. If we overlook the Numbers themselves and we take the time to look deeper, --infer we take the time to read the words used to define the reasoning that lead to an individual being Rated-- we make note of clear lines of thought as to why an individual received a Rating, and therein should the merits of that Rating be judged by the very words used to describe that individual's reputation. Not the Numbers themselves, but the words used to Rate that individual which in and of itself can be used as an accurate referencing point to describe that individual's personal character. Further supported by the very words you read from an individual in any given thread which, you guessed it, further defines the merit of an individual based upon their own words. In closing: A Reputation is merely one of several ways of corroborating an individual's merit and personal character. Factually speaking in a real world application of all of these principles, it indeed does matter regardless of our own view points on the subject because each piece of this kind of information is used by each and everyone of us here, and abroad beyond the workstation screen and the World Wide Web to better familiarize ourselves with the character of the individual that we communicate with. I have not enough hacking knowledge to actually be worthy of any Rep, nor do I have enough criteria to give Rep myself, save in particular cases. The problem is, I have seen how, in other forums, people who are 'better liked' tend to get more Rep than others who are more socially awkward, even if both contribute the same. What is more, great users can even become obsessed with Reputation and start creating content that just seems valuable, just so they'll be given reputation. When I was staff in a community, I forbade my fellow staffmates to give me any Rep, for I didn't trust myself not to enter in that 'game'. RE: What do you feel about reps?? - Linuxephus™ - 04-12-2013 (04-12-2013, 06:17 AM)Wisher Wrote: I agree with this. That would be based upon individual circumstances, each and everyone in accordance to their own. Notwithstanding the tell tale signs that would be obvious of the individual suddenly becoming a "reputation monger" so to speak. Regarding those who are "better liked"; if any individual is receiving ratings on the premise of merely being "better liked", again, the tell tale signs are going to be directly there in the words used for the motivation of the one rating said individual. And even socially awkward individuals come into their own in due time when the phase of being socially awkward has expired whence their comfort level grows to such that they're no longer feeling socially awkward due to being uncomfortable, insecure, or even introverted. It all applies none the less with the factual accounts well covered and documented mate. RE: What do you feel about reps?? - The Alchemist - 04-12-2013 (04-11-2013, 05:51 PM)ILoveYou Wrote: Rep shows your status on a site. The more people like you, the more rep you gain. Many people think high reputable members are more trusted.I feel exactly the same. Its all part of a forum. I totally agree with your disagreement with @"ILoveYou" In fact, ratings are a part of a forum's social structure. And I hate to disagree with you brother, however, as ILoveYou stated, some individuals do in fact have the misguided line of thought that an individual with the highest ratings automatically is worthy of being trusted, when sadly sometimes this is not the case. moke:

Rewrite it! Inquiring minds simply must know!! RE: What do you feel about reps?? - Dawnc0re - 04-12-2013 I agree with Coder-San. Reputation is a value of popularity, not skills, knowledge, trust and other things that matter. RE: What do you feel about reps?? - chmod - 04-12-2013 I agree with the majority to an extent. Rep is a measure of popularity, but the way said popularity is built on such a forum is from being helpful, knowledgeable and respectful to other members thus earning their respect and admiration |
