Yeah I would wait until the other systems come out in order to buy one. Prices will easily go down $50-100. They are coming out this year so just wait it out.

When the PS4 gets released, you could pick up a PS3 extremely cheap. I'd take PlayStation over Xbox any day, I'm not going to pay for Xbox Live to socialize with my friends. I socialize by going outside and seeing my friends face to face.

I have always gone for PS over xbox i only just bought the ps3 as i was always using the ps2. I bought it off a friend of mine ps3 with 16 games for 30 quid lol

Microsoft will present and release the new Xbox 720 this year. If the roumers are correct it is going to be an awesome new console with a lot of great improvememts. So if you want to go for a Xbox wait for the new Xbox 720.
Sony has already presented the new PlayStation 4 and it's a beast. It got a massive hardware upgrade and is a really strong machine for the future. The new controller do also have a touchscreen. I will be released later this year and instead of buying the PS3 wait for the new PS4 it will indeed be worth the time.
Even after the PS4 and Xbox 720 come out, I would still buy a new PS3 or Xbox 360, the prices would drop dramatically.
I agree that the prices on the old consoles will fall. But again the specs for new PS4 and the games (which only will be released for PS4) are freaking awesome. I really meant it when I said that the new PS4 is a beast the only machine on the marcet which will have a change against it would be the new xbox 720 even though we haven't seen anything from Microsoft yet.
I know that it will require you to save more money but please do yourself a favor and buy one of the new consoles. All the new games will primarily be developed for those consoles and they will be supported for many years. Remember there's a reason why the new consoles are being made, it's because of new and awesome technology.
PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND BUY ONE OF THE NEW MACHINES!

The problem with the xbox is it's made by Microsoft, I'd go playstation every time either the ps3 or as Anima said wait and save for the ps4

There's a pretty strong line-up still for the PS3 so although I do plan on getting a PS4 eventually (1yr+), I'm quite content with the PS3's performance. I'd say it was worth it.
