just because something went wrong once does not mean the whole disk is corrupted it's happened to me a few times

Obviously the whole thing is not corrupted as hes able to get to text mode but for a beginner its just easier to redo the install than to hunt down what is messed up with his xserver

Could have just been a hiccup in the install which caused it to mess up. The longer you are in IT the more you will realize that sometimes things just dont wanna work but a reboot is all it takes to fix whatever the problem was.
Thats also what ubuntu avoids with its stability. A lot less likely to have a case of 'wtf why isnt it working.'
