My recommendation first is to learn the tools that adobe photoshop offers.
You will learn shortcuts, workflow and more.

What i exactly did is go to this site -> http://www.creativecow.net/
Download ALL their podcasts ( over 600 movies - each take about 40 minutes ).
They will teach you about the tools, tips, hotkeys, and ofcourse projects.
